Though I have no doubt at all that Elinor deeply loves Edward by chapter 4, She certainly doesn't see the world through rose-colored glasses. She knows, and admits without bitterness, that there are obstacles to her and Edward marrying and she accepts them with no questions asked. She is also so intuned to him, that she can see he cares for her and yet has moments of lowness (which we later find out the reason for) that gives her slight doubts. Her only mistake in her feelings is being too warm about them in front of Marianne.
