After Willoughby leaves, Mrs. Dashwood does much more harm than good by not insisting on asking Marianne if she and Willoughby are engaged. Elinor is right in every way to insist on it.
And then Edward shows up, and he's so cold. It takes a strong person (as only Elinor could be) to hide her hurt and treat him the same as she always did.
