Sense & Sensibility - Chapter 10 - The dent in the polished surface

We are disturbed, as is Elinor, to see Willoughby so mean-spirited about Colonel Brandon. By seeing into Elinor's thoughts, and seeing her set Willoughby and Marianne down for their horrible comments about the Colonel, I begin to feel real affection for Colonel Brandon and begin to distrust my first impressions of Willoughby. He is fascinating, but the cruelty he shows is a spot on his character that glares more brightly than the good in his personality.
